With the weather fast improving, there are some amazing outdoor pools to wet your hair on a hot summer’s day in this muggy city of ours…
1. Kings Cross Pond Club
A piece of art which is fully functional…yes please! The Kings Cross Pond Club is the UK’s first ever man-made fresh water public bathing pond, set within a working construction site near to London Kings Cross station.
Entirely natural and chemical free, the area is the brain child of Ooze Architects and artist Marjetica Potrc. At 40m long, the art/bathing pool encourages visitors to enter the water and use the installation as a piece of experiential art.
Visitors have access to changing rooms, lockers and showers, with lifeguards on duty during opening hours.
2. Tooting Bec Lido
Maintained by the London Borough of Wandsworth, Tooting Bec Lido is situated on Tooting Bec Common, between Tooting and Streatham. It is the second largest pool by surface area in the UK and was formally opened in 1906.
The alternating brightly coloured doors of the changing rooms at the lido, contrasting beautifully against the clear blue water, have made the facility a popular location for advertising and film shoots. The lido is also home to a great cafe, serving wholesome, great tasting food; the perfect remedy to swimming a number of lengths!
3. Hampstead Heath Ponds
Originally dug as reservoirs in the 17th and 18th century, the three pools which make up the swimming area of Hampstead Heath are freshwater havens fed by the headwater springs of the River Fleet.
Of course, there are limited mod-cons here; the pools are only heated by the sun, which makes for a chilly morning dip! And there are the birds…which congregate around the area to catch the fish sucking at your toes as you perfect your front crawl.
4. London Fields Lido
Well kept and well appointed, London Fields Lido is heated and makes for a soothing swim, especially early in the mornings. Located in London Fields park area, the lido is a 50m, Olympic sized pool and is open all year round, with lane swimming available all day, every day.
There are one-to-one swimming lessons, and swimfit sessions also. With an on-site cafe, sundeck and sunbathing area, there is plenty to offer both children and adults alike.
5. Serpentine Lido
Located in beautiful Hyde Park, the Serpentine Lido offers unrivalled views and a truly gorgeous swimming experience in the heart of the city. Established over 100 years ago, the pool offers a unique atmosphere, allowing visitors the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing swim in the Serpentine.
With 110+ yards of open swimming water, comfortable sunbathing, children’s playground, paddle pools and modern changing facilities, why would you go anywhere else?
