Summer is here, and with the warm weather comes the promise that a summer in London may just be the best one around. Parks pop, the bank side explodes and restaurants spill over into the streets. A Thursday evening is nothing without a couple of pints standing outside the pub and weekends are equally nothing if you don’t venture into the city to take advantage of what’s on offer.
London always has an epic calendar of events during the summer months, and this year is no exception. Let’s take a look at what is going on…
Summer Series at Somerset House
Arguably one of the most anticipated events of the London summer calendar is the ‘Summer Series’ at Somerset House. The setting makes this gig series really come alive, providing a backdrop non the like anywhere else.
Londoners love the open air venue, and the line up is always great. This year sees Kelis, Bastille, Franz Ferdinand, Clean Bandit and Sam Smith take to the stage, occupying the grand 18th Century courtyard.
In addition to the ‘Summer Series’, Somerset House also plays host to Film 4 for two weeks in August, to showcase both vintage and recent films to a packed out courtyard. Picnics and blankets are mandatory.
Hold up…Camden Beach? Nope, your ears are not deceiving you; there will be a beach in Camden this summer. So if you are struggling to afford to get away, or simply don’t have the time, you can always make your way northwards and build sandcastles in the 150 tonnes of sand that the Roundhouse have hauled.
Situated on the terrace of the infamous gig venue, Camden Beach comes complete with striped deck chairs, beach huts and of course, a bar. You will also be treated to traditional seaside attractions; arcade games, ice cream and pop-up restaurants should you get a little peckish. Sorry, no seagulls allowed!
London Zoo Lates
With 175,000 animals to see, it could be an idea to visit London Zoo after hours to beat the crowds. Every Friday during June & July, the zoo opens late. With the chance to see the animals that are usually on their backs snoring during the day, and a programme of educational talks, this is not an opportunity to be missed for those big kids amongst us.
There are also a whole host of entertainment programmes available for enjoyment, such as improvisation comedy, theatre, roving performances throughout the park, carousel rides and an acoustic stage. And not to mention the wine-tasting, pop-up bars and street food stalls!
All safe in the knowledge that under 18’s are strictly not allowed!
Street Feast, Kingsland Road
If you are a die-hard foodie, then you simply must make a trip to Kingsland Road this summer. More like a food festival, the ‘Street Feast’ features cuisines from around the world, from restaurants around the capital. Imagine the smell…can you taste it yet??
Every Friday and Saturday until September, thousands will flock to Kingsland Road to smell, taste and take in the party atmosphere, and have a bite to eat of course.
If you prefer to sit and eat, you are able to book a table at Dalston Yard Diners, which combines lush food with The Gin Store, with a selection of over 30 gins to try and buy!
With tonnes of events, attractions and exhibitions over the summer months, there is no reason to get bored in London. Get out there, and get exploring!
